[ Clay considers the lit screen for a long moment before he picks up the phone. Unlike Cadence, he’s alone in his sizable home; No pretexts or cover ups necessary. A wry laugh punctures the music permeating his living room as the key clicking noise resumes with fervor. He growls as he types, getting up to go into the kitchen to make a heavily poured drink. ]
I would prefer not to end our current partnership but I need to know that I can trust you enough to keep appointments. This isn’t the first time this has happened either- Just to remind you. That said, my time is valuable and this was a business meeting we arranged and you failed to attend. [ kind of. He sends the first paragraph and types a follow up reply. ]
If this happens again I may have to find an alternate company entirely, though it would pain me to do so.
Are you forgetful or stupid, you fucking psycho mermaid?
[ It’s about another hour before Cadence replies. She pointedly ignores the screen in favor of her current entertainment before eventually slipping away to the restroom. She lets out a soft but sharp laugh.
Not pissed enough to follow through...she smiles at the slip-up. ]
I’m can’t think of what appointment you would be referring to. Unless explicitly scheduled ahead of time, we cannot accommodate off-hours requests. These appointments will also incur additional fees. Please feel free to reach out to Tim if you have urgent requests moving forward, he’d be happy to accommodate you and put you in touch with alternate members of our team.
As always Mr. Emerson, your satisfaction is our priority.
[ It’ll just have to come from your hand tonight. ]
[ Clay loosens his tie and weighs his options, checking his Richard Mille despite just having his phone in his hand. Something about the ticking and reading the clock hands calmed him a bit. Still early enough, he ventured. After another long moment of consideration, he closes out the other conversation with a sneer.
He shot out texts to three other friends, two of whom he knew usually had female companions with them. This was not going to bother him. Not a bit. Clyteus changed out of his jacket and finished the drink he'd poured while he typed back to a reply.
Two hours later, Clay is quite drunk at a club, with a girl at his hip. He kisses her neck, smiling at the giggles and the soft glow of her skin as he whispers to her. Meanwhile, Jerr is without a date and makes lewd comments about performance issues and a cancelled date, which cause Clyteus to shove his friend and use some choice insults about the other's pathetic love life.
Another hour, Clay is in a hotel room and breathing in sweat and the smell of her hair as he pushes it aside. His head begins to clear as the minutes slip by, and it makes everything focus with a sting. There is a moment of missing the smell of saltwater, even as he insists to himself he prefers this woman's musky perfume.
Perhaps it was then he began to realize he was in trouble. ]
